Critical is a fast strategic card game in the spirit of Exploding Kittens. How to play

How to play Critical

  1. 1. Create or join a room

Pick a private or public room, invite friends, and fill empty seats with AI bots if you want to start before everyone arrives.

  2. 2. Take your starting hand

Each player begins with a Defuse card and a hand of seven random Action cards. The deck contains one or more Critical cards — the explosion you are trying to avoid.

  3. 3. Play action cards or draw

On your turn, play as many Action cards as you like — Attack, Skip, See the Future, Steal, combo two or three of a kind. End your turn by drawing one card from the deck.

  4. 4. Defuse the Critical or explode

When you draw a Critical card, play your Defuse to neutralize it; otherwise you are out for the round. The last player still standing wins.

About the game

About Critical

Critical is a modern take on the exploding-deck genre popularised by Exploding Kittens. Players take turns drawing cards from a shared deck that contains one or more unstable “Critical” cards. Draw one and you’re out — unless you can play a Defuse to neutralise it.

Between draws, players play Action cards to skip turns, force opponents to draw, peek at the deck, or steal cards using two-of-a-kind and three-of-a-kind combos. Every decision is a small bet: spend a Defuse early to control the deck, or hoard it for the round that ends in flames.

On Arcadeum, Critical runs entirely in your browser — no download, no signup wall. You can spin up a private room and share a link, join an open public game, or fill the empty seats with AI bots and play solo. Matches typically last 10–15 minutes per round, which makes it a great fit for a coffee break or a between-meetings session with friends.
